Old School Desk

I was in a book store when I came across this school desk. I had one just like it in grade school. The round hole at the top of the desk was for holding a bottle of ink. Otherwise known as the ink well. The school supplied us with nib pens. The groove at the top was for holding the pen or pencil. On the left hand side under the seat there's a draw that pulls out. That is where we kept our books, paper etc. There were always wads of used chew gum stuck to the under side of the desk. Chewing gum in class was a no, no that could get you a detention. So it was a great place to hide the evidence.

This Is Not A Piranha

Winter kill in Frenchman's Bay. I think someone found this guy dead and threw him up on the bank. The Burbot has the distinction of being the sole representative of the codfish family in fresh water. All its relatives live in the sea. It is also commonly called ling, lawyer, and eelpout. The burbot is found throughout Ontario from the Great Lakes to Hudson Bay. From the eastern portion of Hudson Bay drainage, it ranges to Connecticut, Delaware and Susquehanna systems and all the Great Lakes basins; in the Missouri River system, south to Missouri, Kansas and Wyoming; in the Mississippi River and tributaries, throughout Minnesota and northwest to Alaska. The same species occurs in the waters of northern Europe and Asia.

Bring Me Your Corn

The Ingredion Canada plant, formerly known as Casco, in south London, Ontario, transforms corn into industrial corn starch used as glues for cardboard making; liquid corn sugar used in soft drinks, fruit drinks, baking products, ketchup and candy; corn gluten meal for high-protein animal feed and corn germ later refined into corn oil.

A Lady And Her Dog

It was a mild sunny spring day. The air is always cooler by Lake Ontario so one has to bundle up.

This Is Not Smoke

The time is one-thirty in the afternoon on bright sunny day. Due to a difference in water and air temperatures fog forms over the water surface. The wind is blowing it inland but it soon disperses when it meets up with warmer air. This is a blessing on a hot summer day. It acts as an air conditioner and keeps the surrounding area a few degrees cooler.

Butt Out

Discarded cigarette butts (mainly the filter) are a form of non-biodegradable litter. Carried as runoff from streets to drains, to rivers, and ultimately to the ocean and its beaches. Cigarette butts and cigar tips, an emerging concern. It is unsightly, costly to clean up, and harmful to waterways and wildlife. One of solutions are butt receptacles like this one.

Dalewood Dam

April 3, 2015. In the Springtime the flow of water over the dam is extreme. In the summer it can be reduced to trickle. Located in The City Of St. Thomas, Ontario the dam was original built to form a reservoir as a supply for drinking water. The filtration plant was built in 1890. The system served the community until 1971 when St. Thomas began receiving its water from the Lake Erie Pipeline, rendering the waterworks obsolete. The area surrounding the dam and reservoir has been turned into a conservation area.

Mennonite Transportation

Old Order Mennonites, sometimes called "horse and buggy" Mennonites, have rejected the use of modern technology such as electricity and motorized transportation, and have succeeded in continuing a traditional farming style. Most use tractors and mechanized equipment, though conservative Old Order Mennonites use a horse. Driver’s licenses are forbidden, though motorized transportation may be hired for longer distances.

Mennonite Family

In the mid-1970s, many German-speaking Mennonites began migrating to the Aylmer, Ontario area from Mexico. The Mennonites were Canadian citizens who had moved to Mexico from Manitoba and Saskatchewan during the first half of the 20th century. By the early 21st century, there was a large Mennonite population in Aylmer and the surrounding area. In addition to the Mennonite population there are sizable Dutch, German, and British descended populations in the area. Thanks to Wikipedia for the above info.

Rain Storm

Early yesterday morning a thunder and lightning storm past through. Staying in the house I opened a window and set my camera on a tripod. I was hoping to get some photos of lighting bolts. Unfortunately the lightning came in flashes rather than bolts. This is what it looked like without the lightning.

Tundra Swans

The Aylmer Wildlife Management Area Habitat is a stopover for the swans on their spring migration to the high Arctic Region between Alaska and Baffin Island. Some 120,000 swans make a first landing at sites around Lake Erie in Ohio, Michigan and southwestern Ontario. On this day that I attended there were only a couple of hundred swans. The day before there were 3,148. The count varies throughout the day. Because corn is fed daily at the Wildlife Management Area, swans concentrate in numbers here.

*****************************************

From wintering grounds in the states bordering Chesapeake Bay, the eastern population of the Tundra Swan begins its annual spring migration northward to breeding grounds. Each year it’s expected that 10-60 thousand birds will stopover here.

My Old Tree Revival

Thanks to Stefan Jansson and his blog "Photos From Haninge" I started my own photo project about My Old Tree. It was done on my other blog "Occupied With Photography". On Monday, December 22, 2014 I made my last post to the blog. I found it too much for me to continue with two blogs. The other day I was out for a walk and came across "My Old Tree" and realized I have been very sloppy in keeping track of it. In fact I have been so bad at it that the last posting I did was on Wednesday, September 05, 2012. So after a period of over a two year lapse I have decided to pickup where I left off.

Signs - Banana, Closed For The Season

My wife and I went to the zoo last January. It was a freezing cold day of -17°C (1.4°F). It was not the best day for a frozen banana. It turned out we were also almost the only visitors to the zoo that day. I wonder why. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.
