Fungi Are Not Plants

Since 1969 Fungi were first officially recognized as a distinct group. Scientist more recently, using DNA sequences and comparisons of cell structure, have learned that Fungi are in fact more closely related to animals than they are to plants. Superficially, they remind us more of plants than animals because they don’t move, but scratch the biological surface just a little and that’s just about the only thing they have in common.

Condo Construction #9

I am still keeping an eye on the condo construction. The height limit of 19 floors has been reached. Work has started on enclosing the lower units. So far, so good.

Mother's Day

Along the Waterfront Trail there are many benches that have been dedicated to loved ones that have past on. Leaving flowers of remembrance is a common sight through the year. It is an important tribute for us that are still here.

Enchantment

This is one of many carvings that artist sculptor Dorsey James has throughout the park. This one belongs to the Kijimba Kind group. The word Kijimba comes from the Bambara people of black Africa. It means spirit. The word Kind is from white Germany. It is taken from the word Kinder, which means children. i.e. kindergarden. In the English language, kind refers to a type, like mankind. Dorsey has taken these words from cultural and racial extremes in an effort to reflect all races as black and white incorporates all colours and values. Kijimba Kind are, then, spirit children or children of the spirit from all types and colours. They symbolize our history as well as the diversity of our religions, our myth and our legend. They are reminiscent of the kinder, gentler side of who we are and who we may someday be.

Simcoe Street United Church

The Simcoe Street United Church began as the Simcoe Street Methodist Church. It was renamed in 1925 when the United Church of Canada came into being. Opening services held on May 31, 1868 included a sermon by Reverend W. Morley Punshon, described as the most eloquent man of Methodism. Ornamental timber arches and tin ceiling panels dominate the interior. The tin ceiling panels were supplied by the Pedlar People Limited, a local Oshawa firm. The church was completely renovated between 1911 and 1915 to enlarge the choir area, add new pews and a heating system, and to build a new Sunday school building.
