Yup... that's me trying to ward off some pretty scary graffiti. 

WWII Ruins

There is not much left of the Chapel Point Battery Site a World War II era fortification site at Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, built to guard Sydney Harbour.

Chapel Point includes an observation post and gun batteries and several below ground fortifications. The buildings and underground fortifications are all included in the historic designation as well as the surrounding property. It is valued historically as it played a significant role in the defense of Sydney Harbour during World War II.

The site was decommissioned in 1943 and largely dismantled in 1948. The town of Sydney Mines later purchased the site.

Unfortunately it has not been able to withstand Graffiti attacks.

Merchant Marines

On May 1, 2016 in The City Of Sydney, Nova Scotia  a new WWII Memorial was unveiled on the  harbour waterfront. Known as the merchant navy, these sailors risked their lives every time they boarded a supply ship and headed across the submarine infested waters of the Atlantic. The merchant ships were prime targets for German submarines. German U-boats patrolled the waters in an attempt to cut off much-needed supplies overseas. According to Veterans Affairs Canada’s website, some 12,000 men and women served in Canada’s Merchant Navy. The casualty rate was one in seven. Over 25,000 merchant ship voyages were made during the Second World War.

As I post this, outside it is pouring rain with lots of thunder and lightning. but it really has been a hot dry summer.

St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica

The history of St. Peter’s Cathedral goes back to 1834 with the opening of St. Lawrence Church located on what is now the front lawn of St. Peter’s Cathedral.  After a devastating fire and rebuild, St. Lawrence Church was re-established and by 1856 the Parish had become known as St. Peter’s. Among the cathedral's most notable features are its massive bell towers, high transepts, imposing sanctuary and fine rose window made in Innsbruck, Austria.

Taking Pride In Crosswalks

The rainbow flag is synonymous with the LGBTQ community and as such the municipality is showing its support by laying down the colours in some of our crosswalks, just in time for Halifax Pride 2016,

Mayor Mike Savage says the rainbow crosswalk pilot project demonstrates the Halifax Regional Municipality’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Spider Web

A mixture of electrical and phone cables. I am sure the technicians can figure this out. 

Peggy's Cove Village

Located in Nova Scotia the cove is a working fishing village. Fishermen come and go, lobster traps and fish nets can be found on the wharves and roadside, and fishing boats come and go from the local wharf.

Condo Construction #11

I have been following the hi-rise construction since day one. Yesterday this crawler mobile crane showed up. A kid on the street said it looked like a transformer.

The condo is 19 stories high but the mobile is able to reach higher.

Once it is no longer needed, the tower crane is dismantled section by section and removed.

Job completed! There is still  a massive amount of work to be done on the interior.

Good Read

I just finished reading this book. From 1788 until 1868, Britain did send roughly 164,000 convicts to Australia. America’s dirty little secret? The same exact thing was happening there. In fact, experts estimate that 50,000 British prisoners were shipped off to colonial America. Britain had been shipping convicts to America for decades before they started sending them to Australia. In fact, it was precisely because of America’s fight for independence that the Brits had to start sending their criminals to Australia
