The City Of Kingston honoured their hometown band with a change of a street name. The original signs on what was formerly the lower block of Barrack Street read only "Tragically Hip Way" instead of using the band's full name: The Tragically Hip.
The additional letters made the new signs longer than any other street signs in Kingston, so long that city workers had to fashion new brackets to give them additional support.
By adding the word "The" to the street name the city is going against the precedent established elsewhere. The Beatles have a Beatles Lane named after them in Florida and a Beatles Court in Australia, all without the word "The." The Rolling Stones have four streets called Rolling Stones Lane in the U.S., again all without "The" in the name. My thanks to the The Kingston Whig-Standard for the above information. |
...such rebels!
ReplyDeleteIt is a long name for a streetsign indeed. I only don't know what can be tragically about a hip:-)
ReplyDeleteIn this case the street signs to be installed on the façade, are in favor.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice thing to do, Andy!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen such a long street sign. It's also a very long street name to have as one's address. I live at 1050 E The Tragically Hip Way....
ReplyDeleteInteresting certainly.
ReplyDeleteThat is a long name for a street sign. I guess The is important to have if it wants to be original and true to the name. I never heard of them so I wouldn't have known the difference :)
ReplyDeleteGood for a Sunday morning grin!
ReplyDeleteGood to honor the local band, but it makes for a funny street name. Well seen and documented.
ReplyDeleteInteresting sign. Nothing tragically hip in my area.
ReplyDeleteFitting to honour the band. It occurs to me reading Marianne's comment how the Hip are very much a Canadian band, as opposed to one known well around the world.
ReplyDeleteWe're busily trying to rename a lot of streets here, too.
ReplyDeleteSharon has a good point. Long addresses can be tragically annoying. I have in laws who live on East Cedar Waxwing Drive. It's always a squeeze on an envelope. But then even if you don't know the band it is a little cool to be on something called Tragically Hip.
ReplyDeleteIt is a long name for a street, but kinda cool.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great name for a band, let alone a street. Love it.
ReplyDeleteHow cool is this? Love it.
