Historic Building

Built in 1930 the Dominion Bank is located on the southwest corner of Yonge and Gerrard Streets in The City Of Toronto. It has been designated heritage site by the Toronto Historical Board.

No longer a bank it is now the Elephant and Castle Pub. Designed in 1930 by John M. Lyle, with carvings that represent Canadian agriculture and industry.

Another one on the outside of the building is a large medallion that pays tribute to Queen Victoria. .

You Have Mail

Since its opening in 1914 Port Perry’s Post Office has stood as a landmark for 100 years. The turret clock was ordered from J. Smith and Sons of the Midland Clock Works in Derby, England, and an 800-pound iron bell from John Taylor Bellfounders in Loughborough, England. The clock, which is known to be temperamental at best, requires weekly tuning and upkeep. Due to the cost of the maintenance, the cast iron bell no longer tolls from its perch 50 feet over downtown Port Perry, though the mechanism still ticks away as it has for over 100 years.

Photographed in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick on August 28. This dog reminds me of Tramp, from the movie "Lady And the Tramp". He was a wanderer going where ever he wanted... exploring every nook and cranny. He was in complete control and seemed know what he was doing.

Slugging It Out

It was a chilly morning when I came across this guy struggling along the sidewalk. Most slugs do not hibernate over winter but die off in the autumn. I don't think this one will last to the end of the day.

Forced Retirement

Cabooses were used on every freight train until the 1980's, when safety laws requiring the presence of cabooses and full crews were relaxed. They provided shelter for the crew at the end of a train, who were required to keep a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and cargo, or overheating axles. It's the end of the line for the iconic caboose, a railroad relic brushed aside by modern technology. Most of them have ended up like this one sitting on a rail siding mainly used as a tourist attraction.

Body Language

Body Language: This group of people were standing on a road median waiting for a green light. It was the young lady with the shopping bag that caught my eye. I noticed that she was standing with her legs crossed. My observations over the years have taught me that the stance is a female thing and it's common. It's rare to see a man standing like this.

Storm Clouds Gathering

Rain had been forecast for the afternoon. Sitting at home for a few hours and no sign of rain, I got bored and deiced to go out to the lake shore and photograph some remains of the structures that were once there. Wouldn't you know it... the rain clouds rolled in. Sometimes I just have bad timing.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Conker

When I was a young kid we used to make a very useful item from chestnuts. Using a nail to make a hole through the center... then it was threaded and secured onto a length of string. The next step was to challenge someone who also had one. Then we would take turns striking each other's conker until one of them had the hell knocked out of it. It felt good to have a winner. You can find a much better detailed description than mine here.

Cat House

I like to drive off the beaten track and I came across this building that caught my eye.
Getting out of the car for a closer look I was surprised by what I saw inside.

To me these cats had a strange look to them. I have never seen cats with whiskers as long as these two.

The Lady In Yellow Remembers

In Canada, the poppy campaign officially begins on the last Friday of every October and runs until Remembrance Day on November 11. Last year, the Legion distributed 18 million poppies, raising nearly $14.5 million for disadvantaged Canadian veterans and their families. While the tradition of wearing a Remembrance Day poppy is strong in Canada, and other parts of the Commonwealth, its origins are actually in the United States. Inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields", they were first used by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers who died in that war (1914 – 1918).
