Freak Lunchbox Mural

An international online urban art collective has named Halifax’s Freak Lunchbox Candy Store co-owner Erin Smith's mural as one of its top 20 best murals of 2015. The colourful piece covering the George Street side of the candy store’s building came in at No. 14 in the "All City Canvas" top 20 picks from around the world. Montreal mural artist Jason Botkin created the piece in collaboration with Erin Smith. It took him five and a half days to complete the work.

I stood here for about five minutes watching for someone to return... it never happened. To me, this looks like a setup. Everything looks too neat and tidy for your average street vagrant. Hidden camera some place near by?

Tall Ship

The original Bluenose was launched as a Grand Banks fishing and racing schooner on 26 March 1921 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The ship pictured here is the Bluenose II a replica of the original. From the moment Bluenose took to the sea, it was evident she was a vessel unlike any other. When she took home her first Fishermen's Trophy in October of 1921, the legend began. During the next 17 years, no challenger American or Canadian could wrest the trophy from Bluenose. She earned the title "Queen of the North Atlantic" and was well on her way to becoming a Canadian icon.

The majestic image of the Bluenose has adorned the Canadian dime since 1937 and three postage stamps, as well as the Nova Scotia license plate. In 1963, Bluenose II was launched. It was built by many of the same people who had worked on the original vessel at the same shipyard in Lunenburg. The project was financed by Oland Brewery to advertise their products, while also promoting Nova Scotia's maritime heritage and tourism. William Roué, the designer of the original Bluenose, endorsed the vessel. Captain Walters sailed on the maiden voyage.

To teach and promote seamanship and life skills in young Canadians through the opportunity of serving on board Bluenose II. To operate Bluenose II in a safe and efficient manner so that all Canadians may be proud. To maintain and ensure Bluenose II will serve as a sailing ambassador for Lunenburg, the Province of Nova Scotia and Canada.

When I post a photo of pay phones I am surprised that people comment that in their part of the world the phones are either nonexistence or rare. I want everyone to know that they are still alive & well here in Canada. These two standing side by side are bit gringy but still in working order.

Today is Labour Day in Canada. It is celebrated on the first Monday of September and it is a federal statutory holiday. The origins of Labour day in Canada can be traced back to a printer's revolt in 1872 in Toronto, when labourers tried to establish a maximum 54 hour work week. At that time, any union activity was considered illegal and the organizers were jailed. Protest marches of over 10,000 formed in response. This eventually led to the Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald repealing the anti union laws and arranging the release of the organizers as well.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse

The lighthouse is an iconic tourist attraction. While best known as "Peggy's Cove Lighthouse", it was and remains, officially know as the Peggy's Point Lighthouse as its purpose is to mark the point, not the cove.

It was decided in 1868 to erect a wooden lighthouse to mark the eastern entrance to St. Margaret's Bay. The wooden tower was replaced in 1915 with the present day concrete octagon 50 feet west of the original light.

The ground floor of the lighthouse, until 2009, operated as a post office where visitors could mail their postcards in the summer months. Yup... that's my wife leaning on the rock.
