Nostalgia Christmas

I took this photo just before last Christmas. It is a storefront window in a small town. I have been toying with posting it but it just didn't have the right appeal to it. So I took another look at it and tinkered with the lighting until it became more attractive and interesting. For me the scene brought back a time of childhood innocence and happiness that I enjoyed many decades ago. Never underestimate the importance of tiny moments in your life. Never a day goes by without me thinking of treasured moments from the past.

Because the lighting looked better I went for the side view.

Nothing special here today. Just a scene that caught my eye.

Lame Duck

I think this is a female Oldsquaw Duck. Please correct me if I am wrong. I took this photo and then I returned forty minutes later to see her still sitting on the rock facing in the same direction. Many people pass by here and normally these ducks move off to keep their distance from humans. She appeared to be under some kind of stress. Maybe ill or exhausted.

Diftwood

Anything that floats gets washed up along the shoreline.

A lack of bark demonstrates it has been in the water for considerable time. 

Size does not matter. The lake can handle big or small.

St George's Church

This church, built in Gothic style in 1876-7, replaced the original wooden church built in 1839. The stone church architects were Gavillais and Thompson of Barrie, Ontario. Captain Tom Sibbald supervised the building of the church and local craftsmen did the actual building. The gargoyles are a symbols of evil being expelled by the Gospel. The gargoyles (in this case rams' heads) are used as water spouts.

X Marks The Spot

Located at Intrepid Park this is all that remains of "top secret" Camp X. Here, during the Second World War, Canadian and American civilians were trained as intelligence specialists by the British Special Operations Executive. Serving on dangerous missions abroad, these secret agents were not legally protected if caught nor were they openly recognized for their courage and sacrifice. The first school of its kind in North America, Camp X was also an advanced top-secret communications relay station until it closed in 1969. The camp's activities helped build intelligence ties between Canada, Great Britain, and the United States.

Traveling uptown in the nearby City of Oshawa you will find this mural with it's reference to Camp X. It depicts some of the activities at the Camp. Artist Tony Johnson.

Fishing The Ganaraska River

The people you see on the far side are fishing for rainbow trout. Right now until the 4th Saturday in April the fishing season is only open south of the railway tracks. After that the entire river is open season. This railway bridge clearly defines the location of that boundary. And yes... everyone is on the south side.

Peekaboo

She was keeping a close eye on me. Perhaps it was because she was feeding her calf.

Lake Ontario Relics

I don't know how or why these items are here. They look like concrete pipes that are used for storm and sanitary gravity sewer systems. In the early 1960's I used come here with my friends to smelt fish. At that time there were houses along this portion of the lake. The land is presently owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the homes were demolished to make way for the Waterfront Trail.

Condo Construction #8
