Uber5000

Andy | Tuesday, September 19, 2017 | | Best Blogger Tips
I read in the newspaper that artist Uber 5000 had painted a new mural in Toronto's Graffiti Alley. I was excited about going downtown to photograph it but it took me three weeks before I could find the time to go.
___

Like most murals there always seems to something that blocks one's view from getting a good clear photo. In this case it is a wall with private property on the other side.
___

There are a number of items in the mural that only someone from The City Of Toronto might relate to. From this photo I am listing a few of them. If you don't understand click on the highlighted words for more information. As always, you can also click on the photos for a better view. Starting from left to right there is Sam The Record Man sign just below the high flying plane. Darwin the IKEA Monkey climbing the CN Tower. Next is Crane Girl. There are more but if you are interested go back to the first photo and have good look. You might even see Uber5000 dog.

Portia White

Andy | Saturday, September 16, 2017 | Best Blogger Tips
Located on a utility box in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Unfortunately the year of death needs to be corrected to 1968. Portia May White, contralto and teacher born 24 June 1911 in Truro, NS; died 13 February 1968 in Toronto, Ont. She broke through the colour barrier to become the first Black Canadian concert singer to win international acclaim. Considered one of the best classical singers of the 20th century, her voice was described by one critic as “a gift from heaven,” and she was often compared to the celebrated African American contralto Marian Anderson. Portia was named a “person of national historic significance” by the Government of Canada in 1995.

Bridging The Gap

Andy | Friday, September 15, 2017 | Best Blogger Tips
Jamestown Line Bridge - Builder and construction date unknown. Although the design is found on multiple bridges in Ontario, outside of Ontario the design of these bridges would be classified as extremely unusual and rare. Two elements make the design unusual. First, the truss configuration is a subdivided double-intersection Warren. This means that in addition to a vertical member between each "X" of diagonal members, there is also a vertical member that passes right through the center of each "X." Double-intersection Warrens are uncommon, but subdivided double-intersection Warren truss bridges are very unusual. Thanks to Historic Bridges for the above information

Mayor John Tory says he has a “deep concern” about the number of people sleeping on the streets of Toronto and the encampments that persistently pop up in the downtown. “It’s not that I’m embarrassed about it. I mean I am embarrassed about it, but it’s more that I just feel, morally, surely we can do better than this.

On Saturday August 26th, 2017, the Pickering Auxiliary Rescue Association celebrate 50 years of supporting the local community. Their mandate is simple: the preservation of life on the water. From humble beginnings forged out of a passion to help those in need they flourished to be the association they are today. No matter the weather, crew after crew head down to the dock ready to respond to the call over the radio. My thanks to the Rescue Association for the above information.
