Flowers On The Beach

Andy | Thursday, February 25, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips

I don't know why but I am guessing that someone had a ceremony that involves throwing flowers into the lake. At a later time the lake returns them to the shoreline.

Signs - Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Andy | Wednesday, February 24, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips

There are approximately 37,000 public, private and pedestrian highway railway crossings in Canada. Trains CANNOT stop quickly. An average freight train travelling at 100 km/h requires about 2 km to stop. A passenger train travelling at 160 km/h requires about the same distance to stop. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

Living In Plastic

Andy | Tuesday, February 23, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips

February has been a roller coaster ride of up and down temperatures. This is the second massive thaw this month. If you want to live out the winter on a boat, plastic wrap is a must. It doesn't keep the heat in but it keeps the draughts out. The wind was blowing strong and quickly blew the black cloud out of sight to the east.

Winter Light Beacon #2

Andy | Monday, February 22, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips

Carrying on from yesterday's posting. The water evaporation on this side looks more like fog. The beacon is located on the entrance to the harbour. Coming In Rule: When entering harbour (up stream) the red port mark should be kept on the boat's port (left) side the green mark on the boat's starboard (right) side. Going Out Rule: When leaving harbour (down stream) the red port mark should be kept on the boat's starboard (right) side and the green mark on the boat's port (left) side. My thanks to the National Boating College for the information.

The day I took this photo the temperature was -25°C | -13 °F. The sun was shinning and caused the vapour to rise. I don't know how they can stand it but there are ducks in the water and two swans in the background.

Signs - No Bread

Andy | Wednesday, February 17, 2016 | | Best Blogger Tips

Bread can be fattening to ducks and make it harder for them to fly and otherwise evade predators. It can also increase the spread of diseases in two ways. First, a carbohydrate-rich diet leads to greater defecation, and bird feces easily harbor bacteria responsible for numerous diseases, including avian botulism. Second, moldy bread can cause aspergillosis, a fatal lung infection that can decimate entire duck and waterfowl flocks. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

Shoe Tree

Andy | Monday, February 08, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips

It all started in the 1990's when George Sarasin put a pair of work boots in the tree that he didn't need anymore in case someone else could use them. It was a habit that was passed down from his mother, who grew up in Kirkland Lake during the depression. Today, the tree is covered with shoes. Obviously not every pair that winds up in the tree is reused. It has suffered some damage because of the weight.

A few years ago a branch broke, and now this tree across the road has started to take shape. And so the trend continues.

Signs - Workplace Safety

Andy | Wednesday, February 03, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips

In the Province Of Ontario, employers are required to provide workers with fall protection training if the workers will be exposed to fall hazards. Falls are a major cause of injury and death in Ontario workplaces. The vast majority of these accidents are falls from heights even though the height may be no more than two or three metres. Most of these injuries and deaths have happened because fall protection was either missing or not used. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.
