Located at University Avenue and Queen Street West, Toronto. It was designed by Walter Allward and constructed in 1910 to the honour and in memory of the Canadians who died in defence of the Empire in the Boer War 1899-1902. The figures represent Mother Britain flanked by two Canadian soldiers.

Casa Coffee

Andy | Friday, December 28, 2018 | Best Blogger Tips
It is so strange to see a mural like this that has survived the tags of vandals. I took this photo in Kensington Market, exactly one year ago to the day. You have to ignore 50 years on the mural because Casa Coffee has been there longer than that. In fact last May after 55 years the business owners decided to close shop. Rent increase may have been the cause.

Oldest Gas Station - Eldorado, Ontario

Andy | Thursday, December 13, 2018 | | Best Blogger Tips
There it is in great big bold letters. But history tells us that the first Canadian gas station opened in Vancouver in June, 1907.
___

Unfortunately this station is closed and abandon.
___

So is the "Oldest Gas Station" sign correct? It is believed the gas bar opened sometime in the early 1920s and closed towards the end of the last few years of the first decade of this century. That makes it about 90 years old and that could make it the "oldest" (but not the first) gas station at the time of closing.

Nothing special here today. I am running out of photos to post. It is located near the forested rolling hills or the Oak Ridges Moraine, in the farmland of the Township of Cavan Monaghan.

A Little Bit Of History

Andy | Friday, November 16, 2018 | Best Blogger Tips
This frame building in the village of Queensborough appears on a 1854 survey as the American Hotel. A short time later, it was renamed Diamond’s Hotel. The building served as hotel and tavern until prohibition closed the tavern in 1919. Mr. Clayton Hamm purchased the building around 1919, and operated it as a general store, adding a cold room and large display windows.
___

McMurray’s General Store operating out of the building from 1931 until the late 1970s. Clayton McMurray, nephew of Clayton Hamm, and his wife Blanche were store proprietors; Blanche ran the post office there from 1947 until its close in 1969, which marked the end of an important village gathering place.

Bluenose II

Andy | Tuesday, November 06, 2018 | Best Blogger Tips
The original Bluenose was launched as a Grand Banks fishing and racing schooner on 26 March 1921 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Look at a Canadian dime and you will see it is emblazoned with a fishing schooner that became famous for speed and perseverance. As a racing schooner, she was undefeated in her 18 year career and became a Canadian icon. Bluenose II is a replica that sails out of her home port of Lunenburg a UNESCO World Heritage site on Nova Scotia's South Shore.
