Bread can be fattening to ducks and make it harder for them to fly and otherwise evade predators. It can also increase the spread of diseases in two ways. First, a carbohydrate-rich diet leads to greater defecation, and bird feces easily harbor bacteria responsible for numerous diseases, including avian botulism. Second, moldy bread can cause aspergillosis, a fatal lung infection that can decimate entire duck and waterfowl flocks. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

Looks like the ducks do a picket line. Clearly not amused here.
ReplyDeleteThey should place such a sign here too. Some people dump complete breads into the water or on the shores, thinking they help the poor birds through the winter.
ReplyDeleteThey looke really peed off about the sign
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see this sign. I hate it when I see people bringing bread to ponds to feed the birds. I always thing if they want to feed the ducks, bring some bird feed.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. I didn't know that. We've fed bread to ducks for years. Well, not recently, but... Won't do it anymore!
ReplyDeletethe whiter the bread, the sooner you're dead they say
ReplyDeletepoor things and we've been feeding them bread all this time :(
ReplyDeletei purchase duck feed for them but i googled this subject once and a few articles said it was fine to feed them bread. i decided to just stay with the "popular" opinion....it looks like they are reading the sign!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can see the disappointed look on that ducks face as it reads this sign. No more bread, darn.
ReplyDeleteWe could use more of those signs around, Andy!
ReplyDeleteInteresting. This is a new sign for me!
ReplyDeleteDid not know that.
ReplyDeleteThere's someone in my area that drops seed on the snow near an area on one of the rivers that stays open in the winter. The ducks come right on in.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sensitive sign...aware that people mean well, but warning of consequences.
ReplyDeleteThey seem a little unimpressed with the sign!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great sign, and more are needed.
ReplyDeleteLOL!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy SIGNS, SIGNS
So many times I want to say "stop that" you aren't doing the ducks any favors...
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for this instructive sign.
ReplyDeleteIt's against the law to feed our local ducks for that same reason. Love the colors in their feathers.
ReplyDeleteI still feel bad that we didn't know any better all those years ago, when our now middle aged kids were little. Everybody did that and it is a wonder the ducks even survived. This is a good reminder Sign, well worded since it gives people a positive suggestion of the seed instead of just shouting "no
ReplyDeleteCalling by from the Signs Meme, overfeeding is indeed bad for them but they do love bread!
