ABC Wednesday Letter "H" - Hotel

Andy | Tuesday, March 08, 2011 | | | Best Blogger Tips

Located in the ghost town of Altona this former hotel was built in 1875. It was a popular entertainment place in the latter part of the 19 th century. It is has been expropriated and boarded up by the federal government for a proposed plan to build a second international airport (Pickering airport) in the Greater Toronto Area. What else does "H" stand for? Find out at ABC Wednesday.

  1. Too bad it can't be saved, could have made an interesting museum, but I guess these days airports are considered more important! Great post for the H Day though! Hope your week is going well!!

  2. I'm a bit amused - I visit Altona very often and it's anything but a ghost town. But then, it's the original, which is now a part of Hamburg. Do you know since when your Altona has been a ghost town?

I would love to get a look inside the hotel, I bet there are great photo opportunities there.

  3. Too bad. Must have been nice, in its time.

  4. We're flying into Pearson next week on our way to Europe, and I suppose the Greater Toronto area does need another international airport, but why must such things be built on the bones of other more interesting places like this hotel? (I know, a ghost town is probably an excellent location, but airports are far less scenic.)
Interesting choice for H day, Andy.

  5. Great choice for letter H. It looks like it will collapse anytime

Have a peek on my letter H, see you.

  6. Seems almost criminal to destroy such a historical place! But that's Canada for you, eh?

  7. I hate seeing the past being torn down for progress but I guess its needed.
Great post for the letter H.

  8. So much land is now haunted by ghosts and thoughts of that proposed airport!

  9. An interesting building - too bad it has to go.

  10. a hotel that could be used as museum or historic building...

    sad reality check, lighten up.

  11. It is certainly an old fashioned looking building. It has kind of an ominous look to it. I bet the walls could tell some stories. It sounds like it is going to be torn down which is too bad.

  12. It's always sad to see great old buildings destroyed.

  13. That hotel needs some improvement, as much as we want to keep the old look, people still go with the modern
