The first time I saw this building it just grabbed my eyes. Driving down a residential street in Whitby it just suddenly appears when you don't expect to see something out of the ordinary.

The main doors are known as The Lion Entrance. In 1859, this imposing structure was originally built for Nelson Reynold's, the sheriff of the county and took three years to complete. A mock-Elizabethan castle even has a legendary "hidden chamber" and a secret tunnel to complete it's reputation as a true castle of old. At the time of my visit the school was closed and I never got the chance to explore the interior.

In 1879, it came into the possession of the Methodist Church who turned it into the Ontario Ladies' College which changed names in 1979 to Trafalgar Castle School and is recognized as one of the finest private girls school's in the province.

ReplyDeleteHope you don't mind my adding your photos to my collection of Castles. My maiden name is Knight and I have been fascinated by castles since middle school. I now have about 3,000 photos of any building that has a castle look. I always said I would build my own one day. But, doubt that will ever happen at this late stage of my life.
