When the Ontario provincial government stated it would not build the roads or sewers needed to service the site, the plans were shelved in 1975. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.
The proposal has never gone away and recent announcements have suggested that there is still a possibility it will be built. This is a newer sign that has been showing up as the fight continues.

No airports in Pickering and no monorails along the lake!

ReplyDeletewe have a perfectly good airport in Hamilton - try it out!
Let's see who wins this battle.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Halcyon! Nice catch Andy.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought the first sign was bad English for "No picketing airport"! Ha ha!
ReplyDeleteNow i wonder who is going to win in the end.
ReplyDeleteSigns
Hmmm. This fight has gone on for so long!
ReplyDeleteWe have a Naval Air Station that is closing immediately adjacent to where I work and there was a proposal to convert it to a commercial airport, but the locals voted it down. There are similar signs around the area, I should take some photos, thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteThe newer sign has a very clever graphic, but the older one is much more direct.
ReplyDeleteoh, Pickering is a name of a place?:p i tried to figure out what the first sign meant. *lol*
ReplyDeleteSome signs say "come here" and other signs say "stay away". Thanks for the tip about Signs, Signs.
ReplyDeleteThere is a similar issue going on in Cambodia these days... to construct, or not...
ReplyDeleteThose are funny signs at first glance, but too bad about the long-running controversy. Sounds like Eugene OR (our nearest 'big' city, which is infamous for dithering around.
ReplyDeleteAnd on your comment (you can erase this before posting my comment!)....Andy Devine? Yep, I can just hear his hoarse voice. Brings back memories.
