Track Maintenance

In order to keep the tracks in the best conditions, rail inspections are performed regularly, this is done by using Hi-Rail trucks. Track workers are expected to maintain the tracks with the utmost care while performing jobs such as changing cross ties, lubricating and adjusting switches, and tightening loose track components. It is a never ending job.

  2. Fun to watch other people work. I remember meeting and photographing a guy doing this kind of work in my area a number of years ago.

  5. My former neighbour in almere was responsible for half of all streetcar tracks in amsterdam. He used to show me what to watch out for with the rails like splintering at the edges and welding the switches wrong. It was a real day and night job.

  6. Yes, it is a never ending job, but railroads have been reducing their maintenance crews for a long time, and the tracks have suffered.
