Mennonite Transportation

Andy | Tuesday, April 14, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

Old Order Mennonites, sometimes called "horse and buggy" Mennonites, have rejected the use of modern technology such as electricity and motorized transportation, and have succeeded in continuing a traditional farming style. Most use tractors and mechanized equipment, though conservative Old Order Mennonites use a horse. Driver’s licenses are forbidden, though motorized transportation may be hired for longer distances.

  1. Nice coaches and nice that the sun is shining with a grey sky. I like that.

    1. It was mixture of sun and rain clouds that were passing through. I was pleased with the effect.

  2. An interesting style. I have seen many buggies, but never one quite like these. Tom The Backroads Traveller

  3. The bottoms on these buggies are decidedly curved, the Amish ones I have seen are very square. I enjoy a motorcycle ride through Amish land

  4. Where my sister used to live in Missouri, there was a driver who would drive many of them to town to do some shopping while others would only take the horse and buggy.

  10. Wonderful capture. Well done. Reminds me of a news story I covered when I was a reporter in South Dakota. Very interesting lives the Mennonites lead. By the way, we have Mennonites and Amish here in Sarasota too.

  11. Wow! Very cool shot (I like the dramatic sky) and very interesting subject. I've never seen anything like this on the west coast!

  12. Neat photo of these horses and buggies. These are interesting people who have rejected most of the technology of the late 19th and 20th Centuries unless they decide otherwise. Each church community of elders decides what is acceptable, and what is unacceptable. Sometimes these decisions make no sense to outsiders.

  13. It looks you stepped out of time and went back to the past. Dramatic with that sky.
