Old School Desk

Andy | Tuesday, April 28, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

I was in a book store when I came across this school desk. I had one just like it in grade school. The round hole at the top of the desk was for holding a bottle of ink. Otherwise known as the ink well. The school supplied us with nib pens. The groove at the top was for holding the pen or pencil. On the left hand side under the seat there's a draw that pulls out. That is where we kept our books, paper etc. There were always wads of used chew gum stuck to the under side of the desk. Chewing gum in class was a no, no that could get you a detention. So it was a great place to hide the evidence.

  1. I see that you had only access from one side. That must have give some problems by the layout of the classroom. But a very nice design.

  2. Yes I remember this, our school furniture looked a bit different, but we had the ink bottle whole as well as the nib pens and the groove and draw. Great memory of our youth. We only had no chewing gum.

  4. Children's behavior is the same world-wide!! Ihave two of these in my attic; why did I buy them? Nostalgia, I suppose. A library is a perfect place to have one!!

  6. Fun to see these old desks. A book store is a good place to keep one.

  7. A classic. My first thought were the kids that were left-handed and the struggle they had using these desks. I remember one boy who wound up writing with his paper upside down which meant he also wrote from right to left. He had good penmanship too.

  10. I've got an old school desk in the basement, but it isn't as nice as the one in your photo. Ah, so many books, so little time. (Thinks for your comment today. Very witty.)

  12. They were updated somewhat by the time I got to school, but the fundamentals are there (no inkwell). I can't help but notice that the desk caters to the right handers with the inkwell being all the way over there. I'm a southpaw.

  17. What a find! A tiny bit before my time, but not much--we had some as extra classroom seats.

  18. Your desks were classier than mine were. We had somewhat similar tops but they had black metal supports.
