Andy | Thursday, October 24, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

Even though this one is well inland and lives around fresh water we still call them seagulls.
He is much smaller than his saltwater cousins.

Artsy Chairs

Andy | Tuesday, October 15, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

One of the displays from Nuit Blanche (sleepless night). It was a free all night contemporary art event in the City Of Toronto. The massive chair structure is by Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata. According to the official artist’s statement, viewers are meant to ponder how art made up of inanimate objects can call up memories and traces of people who once used them.

One lone para surfer in the water on a very windy fall day.

The rest of his buddies were taking break. Depending on what direction you looked there was a big difference in the sky. Okay... I did enhance the colours in this photo but they are the real clouds in both photos taken minutes apart.

Watching all the girls go by

Andy | Tuesday, October 08, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

She's all dressed up in her best hat and gloves
She's all dressed up
Watching and waiting, but nobody comes
Some days sure are lonely days
And time can move so slow
When you're all dressed up
With nowhere to go

Fish Story

Andy | Sunday, October 06, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

This is the time of year when the salmon swim from Lake Ontario up stream to spawn. Usually this is a good spot to photograph them as they jump over the dam. Really it's not a dam, but a barrier that blocks an invasive species ... the Sea Lamprey. It's barriers and traps like this that prevent adult lampreys from moving upstream to spawn. Look carefully and you can see a blue heron standing on the far side.

***********************************************

The salmon are way too big for this guy to handle.

Something has got his attention.

***********************************************

Having a long beak pays off.

Catch of the day. PS: The fish were not in a jumping mood.

Andy | Friday, October 04, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

It's that time of year again when the salmon head upstream for their annual mating spree... then they die.
These fish have spent their entire life in the fresh waters of The Great Lakes system.

Kensington Market’s Garden Car

Andy | Thursday, October 03, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

Located in the City Of Toronto in the Kensington Market on Augusta Avenue. An agreement with City Hall allows it to be a permanent fixture annually from May to October on the street as long as it has insurance on it. In the winter months it is placed in storage so it doesn't impede the work of snow plows.

Signs, Signs - Ghost

Andy | Wednesday, October 02, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

The ghost sign originally read "Reid’s Crystal Hall Crockery, China, Glassware, Wholesale and Retail." In the meantime a mural has been painted over the sign... with a catch. The artists decided to take the steps to protect the ghost sign. The team of artist used a clear spray paint, typically used as a top coat, to cover the sign. They covered it with the graffiti proof coating and painted over top of it, so in time, after the mural fades, you can literally just wash it off and the ghost sign will be visible. You can view the mural here. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

Why preserve them?
1. Every one of these signs was hand-painted. When you see how sharp and neat some of them are, it’s amazing what they did by hand and not by stencil.

2. They identify who the building was, who used it, and who was there.

3. It shows you the age of some of these buildings.

Teasel

Andy | Tuesday, October 01, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

They grow wild and the seed is a food source for birds. People also use them in dried flower arrangements.
My wife is a crafty lady and used them to make hedgehogs.
