It would be easy for me to pass through the gap in the fence at the Pickering nuclear power plan. If I did, I'm sure that all the alarms would sound and I would be quickly surrounded by armed guards.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Andy | Sunday, December 25, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

Guess who from many decades ago. Christmas--that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance. It may weave a spell of nostalgia. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance - a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved. - Augusta E. Rundel

Behind The Camera - A Screech of Gulls

Andy | Tuesday, December 20, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

While I was out for a walk with my wife, we came across this scene of gulls sitting in the sheltered of the bay. At this location Lake Ontario is to my back. The gulls were here because...

...it was a extremely windy day. The white caps were rolling in on the shore.

It wasn't me but something spooked the screech of gulls. Yup, that's the name given to a group of sea gulls. All three photos were shot in automatic mode. Not only did I have fun taking the photos but I also learned a new meaning for the word screech. The most famous screech in Canada is Newfie Screech.

Home Place is all about change; changes that affect our past, our present and our future. Home Place is a coalescence of universal symbols from a variety of times, cultures and beliefs. These symbols are alive but will vary in importance at different times in each of our lives. The most obvious is the structure atop the hill. Read more here. I'm linking to Show Off Your Shot.

Signs; Signs - No Frying Allowed

Andy | Wednesday, December 14, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

Where do you think you would find this sign?

_______________________________________________

On a smoker's shelter of course. It's okay to turn someone's lungs into charcoal but don't fry their brain. I guess you can tell I'm a ex-smoker. In this day and age smoking has been ban almost everywhere. I get a chuckle at the length smokers will go to have a puff. I see them leave a nice dry and warm work space to go outside and face the elements. One good thing about smoking is that it helps you lose weight. One lung at a time. Now that I have had my rant, I promise that next week I return to a more humours posting.

Behind The Camera - West Montrose Covered Bridge (Kissing Bridge)

Andy | Monday, December 12, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

This is a continuation of yesterday's posting. While I was trying to get a shot looking into the covered bridge this couple came walking out. Rather than capturing a scene without people I believe they add so much more to it. So I snapped away. They approached me and I was expecting them to ask me why I was taking their picture. In order to justify my actions I set my mind to 100% charming. I was surprised when the young lady held out her camera to me asking if I would take a picture of them. I did better than that and took three pictures. I had detected a accent in the lady's voice, so I asked them if they were tourist. Yes, they were from Atlanta, Georgia. (Americans do have an accent especially those from the south.) In my conversation with them I told them about my experience the last time I was in Atlanta. On my drive to Florida about a decade ago the city was having one of the worst ice storms ever.

Suddenly I heard the hoof sounds of a horse comming through the covered bridge. Because I was in Mennonite country I knew what to expect . Unfortunately I had my camera set to a slow shutter speed. That's why the horse has a lot of motion blur. After it passed I hung around hoping I might see Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep come across:-)

Putting a finishing touch on my story. Where would you locate a covered bridge? On Covered Bridge Drive of course. The reason it's called "The Kissing Bridge" is because it is enclosed and the soft light provides a feeling of intimacy for the romantic. I'm linking to Behind The Camera.

Sunday Bridges - Kissing Bridge

Andy | Sunday, December 11, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

The West Montrose covered bridge is recognized as a historic site by Ontario's Archaeological & Historic Sites Board. It is Ontario's last remaining covered bridge and has a 198' span across the Grand River. Visitors come from all over the world to see and photograph this picturesque bridge. It is often referred to as "The Kissing Bridge" because it is enclosed and the soft light provides a feeling of intimacy for the romantic.
_______________________________________________________

The blue sign erected by Ontario Heritage Foundation, to the right of the bridge opening reads: This structure, the only remaining covered bridge in Ontario was designed by John Bear in 1880, on the authority of Woolwich Township Council, to replace an earlier bridge over the Grand River. Built a year later by John and his brother, Benjamin, the 198-foot bridge was covered to protect the wooden flooring and frame against the elements. Known locally as the Kissing Bridge, it later came under the jurisdiction of Waterloo County. In 1937 the province assumed responsibility for the Guelph-Elmira Road, including the West Montrose Bridge, and its floor and sub-structure were subsequently rebuilt and reinforced. Barn Charm - Bowman Barn

Andy | Monday, December 05, 2011 | | Best Blogger Tips

The Bowman's have been land stewards in Enniskillen, Ontario since 1929. In June 2005 the dairy herd was replaced with a certified organic beef herd. The breeds that were selected had a quiet disposition, good mothering ability and excellent meat quality. Currently grazing on our pastures are Red and Black Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, Murray Greys, Maine Anjou, Scottish Highlands, Belted Galloways and one remaining mascot from the Holstein herd - "Linen". This information came from their web page that you can find here.

Behind The Camera - On The Bay

Andy | Monday, November 28, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

I'm a early bird. If the weather is okay I'll usually go walking in the morning for exercise.
Of course, I always take my camera along. I live near Frenchman's Bay, located on Lake Ontario. Normally the bay mostly has Canada Geese on it. This is the time of year when that changes and different kinds of birds stopover on their journey south for the winter. On this first photo the skies were overcast and I thought the day was going to be a cloudy one.

____________________________________________________

Suddenly the sun broke through a small opening in the clouds and the whole scene change to a more golden colour. I made some changes to my camera settings. The first thing I did was change over to manual with a f10 aperture. I then pointed the camera to sky on the right side of the sun for my exposure setting. In order to get the sun into the photo I had to point my camera to a different scene from the one above.
