Last Of The River Ice

Andy | Monday, March 30, 2015 | | Best Blogger Tips

When the river ice breaks up it does so in blocks like this. Floating down river they end up in ice jams. The pressure is so great that pieces like this one get pushed up onto the river banks. The ice will remain here until it melts.

Toronto Transit History

Andy | Sunday, March 29, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

This is scan from a slide (remember them?) that I took in 1973 or 1974. Peter Witt car #2766 remained on active duty until July 18, 1965. The vehicle remained on Toronto Transit Commission's property in storage until it was brought back in 1973 as part of a special "Belt Line Tour Tram" service. It was discontinued in 1975 due to lack of ridership. Later it was used for various sightseeing tour operations, such as a King Edward Hotel “brunch and streetcar ride”, and then for tours operated by “Toronto by Trolley” as well as occasional fan trip charters throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, including being the last streetcar to operate on Mt. Pleasant Rd. on a fan trip in July 1976 when the track was abandoned. As of July 2013, it remains on TTC property and sees occasional use in charter service.

501 Streetcar

Andy | Saturday, March 28, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

Photographed Aug. 8, 2013. Artist: Allan Bender and John Nobrega of Blinc Studios. Located at Queen St. West and Denison Ave., in The City Of Toronto this mural has been photographed many times, including one by RedPat. The interesting thing I noticed about this mural is that the streetcar doors are on the wrong side. In North America all driving is done on the right hand side of the road and the driver's seat is on the left.

Did you know that uranium, one of few forms of energy we use, does not come from the sun? The Earth's uranium was produced in one or more supernovae over 6 billion years ago. Just saying.

You Crack Me Up

Andy | Sunday, March 08, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

I am out early in the morning practising my night shots. When I looked at the results in the viewfinder I see some strange looking lens flares. The camera is on a tripod so I change the angle and the flares are still there. Next I decided to put the lens hood on. That is when I noticed the lens is shattered. Well, not really the lens... but rather the UV filter was shattered.

The moral of the story is, if you cherish your expensive camera lens, spend the few extra $$$ to protect your equipment with a lens filter. It will save you many tears and expensive replacements.

Downspout Ice

Andy | Friday, March 06, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

On a cold sunny winter day up on the roof, the snow begins a slow melt. The melt runs into the eavestroughs then into the downspout where the temperatures are colder. Thus we get ice flows like this one.
