Signs Signs - Street Sleeping

Andy | Wednesday, December 18, 2013 | Best Blogger Tips

Someone has scratched out the word "have" and written "want" underneath it. Which way do think it should be?
Have or want? I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

  1. Have. While they may not want to sleep in a bedroom and sleep outside, I doubt it is on the streets! I get a rotten sour feeling in the pit of my stomach during this cold time of the year and try to avoid walking the city streets.

  2. Have for sure, they don't have much to wanted for I am afraid.

  3. Very odd sign, regardless of how you read it. Don't know the intention, but it is not the least bit amusing.

  4. Have is the word though I'm supprised they publicise it like that, most citys sweep it under the carpet

  5. Great sign but very uncomforting for society. Thanks for showing Andy.

  6. I guess 'have' but have a sneaky feeling there may be a hint of 'want' in some; luckily I haven't had to resolve this one for myself.

  7. First, the sign itself is unusual. I have been told in the past that many homeless people prefer to live that way but, I'm certain that isn't always the case. I've heard the stories of too many people that have been caught up in a series of difficult circumstances that have forced them into a homeless situation. Yes, there probably is a small group who prefer that lifestyle but, I'd say the majority are victims of circumstances.

  8. That's an unusual sign! I would expect that most have to sleep on the street, those who "want" to, probably do because homeless shelters can be more disgusting than sleeping on the street.

  9. I cannot believe street people WANT to sleep outdoors during our very cold winters. I believe they HAVE to, or feel they HAVE to.

  10. Sad but true. I'm not sure how anyone would want to sleep outside when it is freezing cold, which is why Phoenix gets an influx of homeless people in the winter.

  11. The sign hits close to home as we had a homeless relative. Bad choices, addicted to drugs, etc. He did NOT want to live on the street, but he had abused family help so many times that we had to give up for a while and let him see where his choices were taking him. Now he's in school and doing better, but I always feel he is one step away from being back to where he was. :(

  12. Talk about an arresting sign! It is hard to break the cycle, but I'm also sure it's have (sadly).

  13. That's a remarkable sign. And yes, I am sure it is 'have'.

  14. I was going to say pretty much what Karen said.

  15. Oh my Gosh. Wow, is that a pithy comment on the state of the world (not just your city, it is everywhere). I certainly think *have to* is the word, for whatever reason. Wow, this is an image that will stay with me (I usually think of this meme as a light-hearted place, but I am so glad you posted this .

  16. I think 'have' is probably the more accurate word. No matter, it's a sad statement either way.

  17. sad that people have to sleep on the street.

  18. I doubt the homeless "want" to sleep on the streets, they don't have any other choice. This is an odd slant on keeping streets clean. Odd sign.

  19. I'm wondering how they came up with [over] 818 people? Did someone take a census?
Whoever scratched in 'want' has no compassion.

  20. Whatever the perspective, if they had just crossed out "have to" and didn't replace it with anything, it would be accurate.

There's information about Mark Daye, the creator of these signs here. http://redjenny.blogspot.ca/2007/04/please-keep-our-streets-clean-over-818.html

    1. Hilary thanks for heads up on the link. It was useful and gave me an insight of the sign maker.

  21. Now that's a surprising sign! I can only imagine the hard heart of the person who scratched "want" there. Not everyone is able to avoid disasters, losses, or poor choices.

  23. Agree, have to although some do want to. I have a great fear of becoming a bag lady and sleeping on the streets, no idea why.

  24. I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone WANTS to sleep on the street. What an interesting sign you've found here. Sure to stir up some discussion!
