Grain Storage

Many farmers are giving up their aging grain storage for the newer silos that are popping up across the province. Thanks to recent technology and equipment improvements, the grain handling industry is far safer and more efficient than it used to be.

  1. Grain storage bins and silos function differently. Silos are designed to hold silage which ferments in a low oxygen environment to prevent molds and rotting. They are fully sealed from the atmosphere while grain bins are open to the atmosphere using fans to circulate air through them to dissipate heat and moisture. Grain bins and silos may look similar but their use is different and depends on the nature of the farm. The grain drier and bins in your photo are large enough to be an elevator for commercial grain storage and shipping, or a farmer with thousands of acres of grain.
