Andy | Tuesday, June 21, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips
The airport is named after Billy Bishop a Canadian flying ace and Victoria Cross recipient of WWI. He was officially credited with 72 victories, making him the top Canadian ace of the war. A replica of Billy Bishop's Nieuport 17 is suspended over the escalators.

The bouts consist of a total of three rounds of three minutes each.

The Old Dead Tree

Andy | Wednesday, June 15, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips
The old dead tree stood
gnarled weather torn;
its limbs were now brittle.
What stories could it tell
of the centuries it had lived,
the passing lives it had seen,
and the storms it had weathered
when it was young and strong.
When its foliage was green
and gave shelter from the rain.
Now it stands bare and broken,
a sorry sight to be seen.
It must have been beautiful
when it was young
with its canopy of green,
and a nesting place for little birds
among its evergreen.
Now they only used it
as a resting place whenever they pass by.
The old dead tree,
which had seen so much life.

Still Standing

Andy | Tuesday, June 14, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips
I first photographed this house November 16, 2014. At that time I expected it to be demolished in a matter of days. You can see the original photo here.  It is interesting to note that vandals have not touch the old house.

Whitevale Dam

Andy | Wednesday, June 08, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips
The Whitevale Dam is one of the major reasons that Whitevale has become such a popular spot for recreational angling. The dam which was repaired in 2002 is currently used to provide a physical barrier to separate migratory fish species such as rainbow trout and chinook salmon (downstream of the dam) from native brook trout (upstream of the dam). Fishing is off limits at the dam.

WWII POW CAMP 30

Andy | Monday, June 06, 2016 | | Best Blogger Tips
The POW camp also known as Camp 30 was a Canadian run POW camp for German soldiers during World War II located in the community of Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. In September 2013, the camp was designated a National Historic Site of Canada.
Since my last visit in 2013 there has been a considerable cleanup to the grounds and windows have been boarded up on some buildings. The cleanup is the result of turning the roadway into a one kilometer hiking trail.
Graffiti and vandalism continue to be an issue at the camp. The site is now now party central for teens.

Today Camp 30 remains abandoned. Although there is graffiti and the site has been scavenged, the volunteer group Camp 30 Foundation is working to stop the progression of damage. If funding is made available, the foundation would like to see adaptive reuse, whether it be made into a community centre or restaurant space. PS: Today June 6 is the the anniversary of D-Day. “They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Pay Phone's Orderly End

Andy | Thursday, June 02, 2016 | Best Blogger Tips
A hard wired, coin-operated outdoor telephone might seem archaic in a world of smartphones, but Canada’s telecom regulator says payphones still fill a need. That’s why the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is proposing to tighten the rules companies must follow when they decide to cut the cord on the last public phone in a community. We’re talking here about Canadians that are more vulnerable, low-income Canadians, the homeless, maybe perhaps victims of abuse that don’t have the financial means to even have landlines or wireless phones that need to contact the government for social and medical services.

The commission is proposing that companies be obligated to notify communities affected, including municipalities and First Nations, before removing the last public phone. They would also have to notify communities before removing a phone where wireless service is not available. People living in rural and urban communities would also be allowed to express their opinions to local authorities regarding the removal of certain payphones.
