Stand On Guard For Thee

Andy | Tuesday, June 02, 2015 | Best Blogger Tips

This male Red Winged Blackbird was flying over me. I was getting close to his nest and he was squawking and making aggressive motions. The male’s time is spent vigorously defending his territory from other males and predators. They do not hesitate to attack much larger animals, including people.

Finally the female showed up with a morsel of food in her mouth. She tried to go the nest a few times but waited until I moved away.

  1. Nice bird shots and you can't overlook the brilliant red on the wings like a battery machine-guns in a spitfire shooting at you.

  6. Love this post. That first shot is magnificent! We've got red-winged blackbirds here but I've yet to get a decent photo of one. In fact, you'd laugh at my attempts to do so!

  7. What gorgeous birds (although I would be a little nervous about getting swooped if I were you!)

  9. Great photos of these birds. Came across an interesting fact the other day. Redwing Black birds like to nest around shallow marshes while the Yellow Headed Blackbird prefers areas of deeper water. No one knows why.

  10. They are pretty birds. I've never had trouble with one being aggressive with me, but I mainly encountered them on the golf course. Maybe they understood not to interrupt the "game".

  11. I know the males do that for a few weeks during nesting- it's best to just keep moving past. I've felt the claws of one at the back of my head on a couple of occasions, so they show no fear at all.
