La Martre Lighthouse

Erected in 1906 and still operational. Named after nearby Marten River, La Martre Lighthouse is considered by some to be the crown jewel of the Gaspé lighthouses. Though fully automated, it is the only light in Quebec that operates in a non automated manner during the day, so that tourists can see the Fresnel lens rotating in its mercury bath using the original system of weights and cables.

  3. What a gorgeous photo! I would love to see it operating. I don't think I've ever seen one that operates that way.

  4. I love lighthouses. Just last night I saw a show on the lighthouses of Ireland. It was interesting to see the strength of the ocean batting up against these beacons of light.
