Spring Corn Harvest

Don’t be surprised to see corn stalks standing right through the winter in some fields. Apparently wet fields, delay maturity of the row crops and low commodity prices paired up with high propane prices have resulted in some farmers saying maybe they will leave part of their row crops to stand in the field throughout the winter and harvest next spring when they will be at a lower moisture level.

  1. I haven't heard of this before. Wouldn't the crops have been eaten by creatures all winter?

  2. Interesting. High moisture is not a problem where I live.

  3. While there might be a cut in crop yield with spring harvest, there are advantages. You named two, maturity and avoiding mud, but the other is corn will be much drier in the spring, and may not require a propane fueled drying cycle. This cuts farmer's harvest costs. Farmers' profit margins can be quite thin depending on market price. Terrible for them to work for a whole year and lose money.

  8. Do the farmers let the stock in to eat the leftover and unused stalks etc? I know they do here.
