When you look at a street sign in The Town Of Ajax, Ontario, Canada, you are looking at history. Most of the streets have been named after the officers and men that served on the HMS Ajax at the World War II Battle of the River Plate. A battleship silhouette in the lower right hand side indicates the street names that honour the crew members. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

We have a section in our neighborhood that are all the names of the presidents and another section we call Hollywood (after all, we live in Beverly Hills, Fl) that are all named after movie stars ;)...quite a diverse set of values ;)
ReplyDeletenice tribute to those!
ReplyDeleteI like this idea for street names. Nice tribute!
ReplyDeleteThat's cool. I wonder how many people know that?
ReplyDeleteIt's a well known fact in Ajax. The town has a war history. In WWII it was a munitions centre.
DeleteInteresting. Great tribute.
ReplyDeleteI love photos of street signs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice tribute!
ReplyDeleteWe have streets named after the early farm families here and they cause some snickering or are world class tongue-tie-ers: Kitchen-Dick (two families), Woodcock, Schmuck, and Lotzgesell (try saying that over a bad cell phone connection!).
I was wondering about the bike and battleship on the sign :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice tribute.
That's a very nice way to remember those that served. What a great little shot and story you unearthed here.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. I second RedPat's question.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great way to honor those service men and women. Can't think of a better way to name streets.
ReplyDeletea wonderful tribute.
ReplyDeletewe have a district here with streets named after the 24 scouts who died in a plane crash en route to the 11th Scout Jamboree in 1963.

A great way to keep the memory of servicemen alive! Our street signs just have symbols for our region. We have shells on some of the Mornington Peninsula street signs.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely way to honour those in the navy.
ReplyDeleteAjax is one town I have never been in, though I have driven past it many, many times. I have also never gotten off the highway in Whitby or Oshawa, either. From your posts, I see that I should make the time to visit.
