The Ganaraska River Fishway at Corbett's Dam, better known locally as the Port Hope fish ladder (hidden behind the mesh on the left), is operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources. In April up to 8,000 migratory rainbow trout (steelhead) make the run upstream to spawn and in the fall, salmon make the annual migration. Staging and spawning also takes place in the riverbed below the ladder at the fish sanctuary. A trip to the fish ladder is always magical to watch the power of these majestic creatures as they jump the ladder. This photo was taken on March 12. I did not see any fish but my wife spotted two jumping into the fish ladder.

That looks good. Now I am waiting for the shot with jumping fish Andy.
ReplyDeleteMust be impressive to watch the trouts jumping the ladder.
ReplyDeletewe have a wonderful area known as Corbett's Glen
ReplyDeleteIt's a nice shot. Looks rather cold. Maybe the fish went south for the winter?
ReplyDeleteI love the vocabulary you use to describe the process: magical and majestic.
ReplyDeletebeautiful....i love the motion in the water!!! have a wonderful weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is something I've only seen in film. I'd love to see it in person.
ReplyDeleteIt is a splendid shot, Andy!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the fish using that, I somehow think there might be one of those ladders on the Humber River.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your wife may have seen a couple of early birds...uhm, fish. It's amazing to see how hard they have to struggle. (I wonder if humans would reproduce as much if the struggle were this hard.)
ReplyDeleteNice -- and it look like the snow is melting!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how fish are able to jump the ladders!
