Bike Patrol

At one time it was rare to see a police officer patrolling without a squad car. In 1989, the Toronto Police Service introduced its first Bike Patrol Unit. Bicycles allowed officers to cover more ground than on foot, and they could travel where patrol cars could not. It also makes the police more visible to the public. With this visibility also comes an increase in human contact with the community.

  1. Nice to see them on bikes, they must have been inspired by Amsterdam police.....:)

  2. Lucky you shoot with your camera otherwise you had some bikes on your back. Nice shot Andy and the B&W gives it more tension.

  4. I think this is a good idea. The City of Ocala tried this in the downtown area for awhile, but for some reason gave it up. They also tried cops on horseback but that didn't work, either. Not sure why.

  5. You see more and more of them around and not just downtown either but even in the outer parts of the city.

  6. We have them here as well, though with the coming winter, they'll be using other modes of transport for awhile. We've also got paramedics on bikes, which comes in extremely handy.

  7. We have bike patrols here too. You are so right, it's a great way for the police to have more contact with ordinary citizens instead of only with suspected criminal element.

  8. I have mixed emotions. I like the concept for the reasons you state, but I feel that shorts and those dumb helmets don't exactly represent someone who's gonna take care of a bad situation. I wonder if they get more "guff" from rowdies than they would otherwise.

  10. Always good for them to have presence. We don't have that here.

  12. Plus it has to be healthier for them than riding around in a car all day.

  13. Bicycle patrol has many advantages for policing urban areas as you point out. Often those violating the peace do not see bike riders as police until they are stopped. It is a healthy move in all respects. Like your fine b&w photo.
