Archives 2017. Located at The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. In May of 1975, the Museum's B-25 Mitchell arrived at Hamilton Airport flown by Harry Kelly. Apparently, on the arrival pass, the bomb bay doors were opened and a load of watermelons were dropped. Airport officials weren't too impressed.

ReplyDeleteThe Michell bomber is a cool aircraft from WWII. Love the nose art. It was a real workhorse used in all theaters of operation, and was forgiving to fly. I see this B-25J is set up to strafe an enemy with 8 forward pointing 50 caliber machine guns. I think the watermelon bombing story is funny, but I can see officials not being amused. BTW, not so strange to see sculptures displayed in Sioux Falls, SD. They display about 60 new pieces every year.

ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to consider what a short time it was between the Wright Brothers and this plane. There are lots of airliners that are as old as that difference.
