When I was a young kid we used to make a very useful item from chestnuts. Using a nail to make a hole through the center... then it was threaded and secured onto a length of string. The next step was to challenge someone who also had one. Then we would take turns striking each other's conker until one of them had the hell knocked out of it. It felt good to have a winner. You can find a much better detailed description than mine here.

I always love the chestnusts, especially when they just have come out of their shells. I don't know your game but we made little puppets of them with matchsticks.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Thank you for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteSounds like something kids would do! A fun game...and your photo is lovely. Do you have a chestnut tree?
ReplyDeleteNo chestnut tree for me. This one is located in a city park.
DeleteBoys will be boys...but a nice cheap toy.
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like a fun kids game. We don't see Chestnut trees here in Arizona. I do recall picking up some of the fallen chestnuts on a trip to Paris one time.
ReplyDeleteMy boys would have loved that game, except they would have tried to knock each other in the head with it.
ReplyDeleteMy dad spoke of playing this game. I hadn't thought about it in years. Thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteI remember it well, Andy! You had to watch that your knuckles didn't get conked.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that being done!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many smashed fingers are part of the game? I love the look of the shiny chestnuts and just recently remarked how few of those trees seem to be around anymore.
ReplyDeleteUs girls did that also but for a huge necklace to wear. Now in 2014 ladies, teens love big necklaces.
