Built in 1892 at a cost of $425.20, Creemore's jail is advertised as the smallest jail in North America.

There are three cells within the jail and during the period of operation it generally incarcerated people for drinking offenses. The jail was used from 1892 until the 1940's when it was locked up and left vacant. It currently is open to visitors during the summer months. If you are in Creemore you must stop by. It is at the corner of Library St. and Caroline Streets, next to the Creemore Public Library.
I like their sense of humour! I will definitely stop and see this if I ever get to Creemore. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating post and place - nice photos. But a jail's a jail, I'd rather be outside!
ReplyDeleteClaiming to be the smallest jail in North America may be a tall tail. The jail in Scenic, SD in late 19th and early 20th Century was a single iron barred cell set in the main street. It had no protection from weather, and no source of heat.
ReplyDeleteYou are more than likely right. There are few others that also lay claim to being the smallest. Creemore might be laying claim to smallest jail still in existence.
Deletevery interesting, I love old history
ReplyDeleteI hope that the inmates had library privileges while incarcerated!
ReplyDeleteLove little tidbits of history like this. What fun!
ReplyDeleteVery cool. I'd heard of and sampled Creemore (Springs) Ale but had never heard of its jail. ;)
