Toronto's Gem

The Princess of Wales Theatre is a 2000 seat playhouse built by the father and son producing team of David and Ed Mirvish. The Princess of Wales was the first privately owned and financed theatre built in Canada since 1907 and the first anywhere in North America in over 30 years. Construction began on August 6, 1991, and the building opened to the public with the musical Miss Saigon on May 26, 1993. Believe me, the inside is much more lavish than the outside.

  4. I saw Les Miserables there back in the late 90's when I was on a weekend trip to Toronto from Chicago. It was a production starring the original lead Colm Wilkinson. It was the highlight of the weekend trip and it wasn't even planned. It's a gorgeous theatre.

  7. I can't recall ever attending a performance or concert in there, though I've passed by it frequently.

  8. That is a large theater. Hope it remains successful, but I'm not sure I want to connect to my inner elf.

  9. You are right about the interior, Andy! The Frank Stella murals that cover the walls and ceilings are spectacular!

  10. BTW, is this that "Elf" movie of a few years back starring that big tall bozo by name of Will Ferrell? It was an horrendously stupid movie...

  14. I didn't realize there was such a dearth of theatre construction. I like the reflections you caught in this shot.

  15. Neat building, would be cool to see the inside. The owners must have a deep love for the theater to build this place! Good for them!
