The sign clearly shows a "Press Gang". They were used in the 18th and early 19th centuries, to take men into the British Navy by force and with or without notice. Thank goodness things have changed and in present time "The Press Gang" is a restaurant that offers fine dining in the heart of downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. I'm linking to Lesley's Signs, Signs.

That were the more black pages from history. It it delivered at least a nice sign. Thanks for showing Andy.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people had their lives turned upside down and/or ended via the press gangs. I also prefer the restaurant, no matter what kind of food they serve! :) Really like that sign, though.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the food is good and they don't have to pressgang customers Andy :) Times were not so good back then!
ReplyDeleteLove Halifax been to all the fine dinning in that town when on holidays.
ReplyDeleteThey are all known for fish, clams, Osters, shrimps. Yummier.
Got to love Halifax.
Also took the whale boat but was disaster that day for us. The waves were over ten feet and a huge storm in a small boat for tourists and hubby and I were the only ones that were not sick so I dare not go on. I am sure you know what I am saying. So glad to take the bus back.
Gosh, isn't it amazing how things were not *that* long ago! I've heard the term "press gang" without ever knowing exactly what it meant. Thanks for the lesson!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great style of sign and a suitable name for a Halifax restaurant.
ReplyDeleteI love signs with a history.

ReplyDeleteI think this is one of the best times in the history of the world to be live. Shew!
It is good to know the history of the sign - or one might think those men were the staff....
ReplyDeleteI love interesting signs and this one is great.
ReplyDeleteSeems a strange name to choose for a restaurant so I'm presuming it was originally a pub.
ReplyDeletei really like this one with the history!
ReplyDeleteKnew about that happening, but never heard the term 'press gang'.... love the history and the restaurant looks good.
